CAC expresses concern over rise in irregular import of goods to Argentina

Buenos Aires, December 18 (NA) – The Argentine Chamber of Commerce and Services (CAC) has expressed concern over the increase in the “irregular entry” of goods into the country. The business sector, across its various areas, has been feeling the impact of this illicit activity not only in commercialization but also in local production and employment, the entity stated in a communiqué sent to the Argentine News Agency. Additionally, it noted that the national treasury is being affected due to the loss of revenue from import duties, internal taxes, and VAT – to name the most relevant ones. The CAC also warned that numerous goods illegally brought into the country – such as cell phones, air conditioners, televisions, and notebooks – fail to comply with regulations related to electrical certifications and ENACOM homologations, and also lack official warranties and technical support for consumers. “It is evident that these issues clearly infringe upon Consumer Defense and Commercial Loyalty regulations, while also putting end-users at risk,” the statement said. In this context, the entity advocated for the strengthening of control and detection measures at border crossings, in order to improve the identification and prosecution of those responsible for the irregular entry of goods across borders and of illegal sellers within the local market, who earn extraordinary tax-free incomes, often capitalizing on the commercial advertising of international brands. “The CAC is convinced that the coordinated work of the different public bodies is key to implementing better and more effective controls and inspections on sellers and resellers, both physical and online, to ensure compliance with the legal framework and fair competition,” the statement concluded.
